Maroubra Apartment Renovation / Tulum-Inspired Coastal Interiors
A considered transformation of a top-floor Art Deco apartment in Maroubra, this renovation was designed to create a light-filled, elevated coastal home that balances the character of the original architecture with a relaxed, contemporary aesthetic inspired by the warmth and natural beauty of Tulum.
The interior design approach centred around creating a sense of calm and understated luxury. Rather than competing with the apartment’s existing architectural character, the renovation sought to enhance it — restoring the original timber floorboards, celebrating the soaring ceilings and allowing the abundance of northern light to become an integral part of the interior experience.
The interiors were reimagined through a carefully curated palette of warm, earthy neutrals, organic textures and natural materials, introducing a modern coastal sensibility without leaning into a traditional beach-house aesthetic. The result is an atmosphere that feels tactile, relaxed and sophisticated, with subtle Tulum influences woven throughout the scheme.
At the heart of the renovation was the bathroom, transformed into a contemporary retreat, introducing a refined material palette and full-sized bathtub to create a space that feels both practical and updated with a micro cement finish applied to the walls and floor.
In the bedrooms, the focus was on creating calm, restorative spaces. The north-facing main bedroom maximises natural light, with soft finishes, plush carpeting, built-in storage and plantation shutters opening onto a charming Juliet balcony. The second bedroom follows the same understated approach, balancing functionality with warmth and comfort.
Throughout the apartment, every detail was considered to create a cohesive design language — from the restoration of original architectural elements to the introduction of contemporary finishes, natural textures and warm tonal layering.
The completed renovation delivers a sophisticated interpretation of modern coastal design: a serene Tulum-inspired apartment that feels connected to its Maroubra setting while remaining timeless, refined and distinctly contemporary.
